The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission is performing a pilot project named MOLAND (Monitoring Land Use / Cover Dynamics), the aim of which is to measure the extent of urban areas and regional developments, as well their progress towards sustainable development, through the creation of land use and transport network databases for various cities and geographical areas in Europe. The project covers wider issues linked to sustainable development, and also aims to create a network of partners and collaborators within and outside Europe.

The aim of MOLAND is to provide an integrated methodology based on a set of spatial planning tools that can be used for assessing, monitoring and modelling the development of urban and regional environments. The main feature of the project is that it allows quantitative and qualitative comparisons at pan-European level, among areas subject to transformation due to policy intervention. Currently, a total of 40 urban areas have been analysed in Europe and a wider network of links is being created in collaboration with existing organisations such as EUROCITIES, METREX and others.

This workshop presentation aims to provide an overview and update of the project, and to participate in scientific discussions around themes and issues related to sustainable urban development by stimulating the creation of a European network of excellence on the subject, in the framework of the forthcoming European Research Area.
