This volume contains the proceedings of the COST Action 839 Workshop held in Merial, Lyon, France, from 18 to 20 May 2000. Abstracts of the keynote lectures and presentations given at the workshop can be accessed on the 'Working Groups' page of the COST Action 839 website:

Immunosuppressive viral diseases in poultry have an important economic impact due to the direct lethal losses and indirect losses as a consequence of immunosuppression and the interactions they might have together and with other factors. In this context, the increased use of antibiotics and chemicals to fight against opportunistic infections is, more than ever, of major concern for human health. COST Action 839 'Immunosuppressive viral diseases in poultry' tackles these issues. Its main objective is to increase knowledge in infectious bursal disease and chicken anaemia and to promote exchange of knowledge and technology in the fields of epidemiology, diagnosis, vaccination, immunology, molecular biology and pathogenesis and interactions between the two viruses.
