Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This brochure summarises the research on the off-site management of nuclear accidents supported by the Commission in its 4th and 5th Framework Programmes. Some consideration is also given to earlier research to provide the background necessary to understand the origins of, and needs for, research in this area. Commission supported research has made a major contribution to providing "state of the art" decision support tools or systems that can be used for improving policies on off-site accident management and in their practical implementation. The participation of most of Europe's key institutes in this research has been instrumental in its success. Significant cost savings have been achieved through sharing in development and avoiding unnecessary duplication. Despite these achievements, more remains to be done to ensure that, should a future accident occur, the necessary arrangements are in place to protect those affected and to manage and restore contaminated areas in a socially acceptable manner.
