Abstract

This event was the second in the series of CLUSTER seminars. A first seminar on 'In situ testing in underground research laboratories for radioactive waste' was held in Alden Biesen, Belgium, on 10 and 11 December 1997 (see EUR 18323 EN). The objectives of this event were:
- To provide a forum for the wider dissemination and discussion of the results of the major projects co-funded by the EC in underground research laboratories (URLs).
- To present an overview of the current and planned activities in URLs.
- To review and discuss the progress and needs in modelling the engineered barrier systems (EBS) processes of the ongoing large-scale in situ experiments and their application in performance assessment.
- To further stimulate the exchange in information and international cooperation in the light of EC research policy for the sixth framework programme and the creation of the European Research Area (ERA).

The technical programme consisted of 15 presentations of some of the main projects funded as part of the fifth Euratom framework programme, nuclear fission (1998-2002) and related to underground research laboratories in the main geological formation (argillaceous and crystalline rock formations and rock salt) for radioactive waste disposal and of national or URL research programmes. The projects presented addressed the following topics:
- Large-scale field testing of repository concepts.
- Engineered barrier demonstration and assessment.
- Site and host rock characterisation and methodologies and assessment.
- Approaches in the modelling of the EBS thermo-hydromechanical processes and their application in performance assessment.
