  • Development and implementation of intelligent systems for the real time optimisation of product quality in rolling mills and process lines (DISRO)

Final report on Contract No 7215-PP/008, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000

The purpose of this project was to extend the intelligent techniques developed in previous projects, such that their use online could be demonstrated. It was known from earlier studies that technologies such as these could be oversold and even applied to the wrong application. It was therefore considered appropriate within the scope of this project for more than one problem to be tackled and applied to more than one process. This would then give a realistic demonstration of the technology and its associated advantages and disadvantages.

Throughout the project, the focus of the activities has been mainly the Llanwern Hot Mill and Avilés Tinplate Line 2. This has built upon studies undertaken in both sites, which have continued to develop in similar areas. Based on the findings of this project, the benefits of developing intelligent monitoring and control techniques have been shown.

The business objectives in each plant are completely different, aiming at critical items for both processes but keeping a common base in the methodological approach, the communication and storage design and finally the techniques introduced.

The perspective given by this project avoids the simple view of one specific facility that could guide the results to an optimum solution for a particular problem without the strength and consistency of a bigger field of objectives including mills and lines control. The results are encouraging for the use of these techniques.
