The meeting was arranged to bring together experts to present reports on current understanding on the surface energy balance in urban areas and to discuss future research needs. This volume contains extended abstracts of the eight presentations, which were given at the meeting, covering the following topics:

- The siting, choice and operation of surface instrumentation in urban areas.
- Heat fluxes and stability in cities.
- Remote sensing of the urban surface energy balance.
- Numerical study of urban mesoscale effects on the atmospheric boundary layer.
- Urban-rural energy balance differences.
- Field measurements and modelling of surface fluxes in Birmingham, UK.
- A new modelling of heat exchange between urban soil and the atmosphere.
- A parameterisation of heat and momentum fluxes in urban areas for mesoscale models.

The meeting was organised by Working Group 2, "Surface energy balance and mixing heights", of COST Action 715, "Meteorology applied to urban air pollution problems".
