Final report on Contract No 7210-PA/010, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000.

Numerous artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have emerged in recent decades. Whilst many have been applied to issues arising with the manufacture of steel, there is still scope to contrast and evaluate such techniques so as to seek improvement in process control and through-process modelling performance as achieved with more traditional techniques. The purpose of this project has been exactly this, to determine if improvement in process control can be achieved through application of case-based reasoning, fuzzy logic and neural networks to existing control issues.

Three themes have been addressed by the international partners: retrospective diagnosis of through-process control, optimisation of alloying strategy for manufacturing success at low cost and improvement in process control of steelmaking unit operations. Research related to each of these themes has been successful in the creation of new tools directly applicable to one of the three steelmaking plants at which development has been focused.

Learning within the project has included the value of combining different Al techniques to exploit their strengths and the validity and necessity of regarding these techniques as adjunct or complementary to more traditionally exploited techniques such as standard statistical methods, optimisation by linear programming and process modelling from first principles.
