Abstract

Final report on Contract No 7210-PA/020, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000.

The objectives of the present research are to optimise the operation and to improve the heating uniformity of the charge at the reheating furnace at ProfilARBED, Differdange. Due to the very large size and complex cross-section of the beam blanks, the conventional mode of operation presents a series of unresolved problems.

To this end, an on-off regulation for the 10 involved 1.5 MW burners has been investigated and an on-off control for the existing burners with sequential firing was chosen. A new regulation algorithm has been developed which takes care of the position of the product in the furnace, the desired crosswise temperature distribution and the type of product in the equalisation zone.

Today, the walking beam furnace at Differdange operates with an on-off regulation system in the lower equalisation zones. The operator has the possibility to influence the transversal temperature profile, and the temperature uniformity of the product has been enhanced and the fuel consumption and Nox emissions have been reduced.
