Abstract

During the first two and a half years of COST Action E12 'Urban forests and trees', approximately 180 researchers from 34 countries around the world have collected and exchanged information within the field of urban forestry and urban greening. The keynote papers from 4 seminars in Vienna, Leeds, Madrid and Reykjavik, as well as from the first worldwide symposium on 'Urban Greening' (held in June 1999 in Copenhagen) are included in this comprehensive overview.

These proceedings include information on urban forests and trees for the practitioner as well as for the researcher. They cover state-of-the-art research topics, from the measurable effects trees have on the microclimate in cities and the removal of air pollutants to urban woodland planning and management and the very special conditions for urban tree planting. The papers are organised into 5 chapters, representing the following thematic sections:
- Urban forest resources - description and inventory.
- Urban soils and tree establishment.
- Tree selection for urban uses.
- Planning and management of urban forests in Europe.
- Innovative approaches for urban afforestation.
