The European Commission has launched a new series of surveys in the 13 countries that are applying for European Union membership, with the aim of gathering information that will show the similarities and differences between the EU and the Candidate Countries. This summary report presents the highlights of the first wave of surveys conducted in October 2001 in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.

The questions in the survey covered issues such as: support for EU membership, the image of the European Union, awareness of the EU and its institutions, trust in the EU and its institutions, information about enlargement and accession, and the speed of the accession process.
