Abstract

Final report on Contract no. 7210-MA/440, 135, 1 July 1996 to 31 December 2000

The aim of the project was to promote the use of stainless steel sheets to manufacture structural components for heavy transport - media submitted to severe in-service conditions such as repeated loads and corrosive environment. Four categories of stainless steel have been investigated:
- 1.4003 (AISI 403) ferritic
- 1.4462 (AISI 2205) duplex
- 1.4301 (AISI 304) austenitic
- 1.4318 (AISI 301L) austenitic.

The investigation was carried out taking into account four specimen types: smooth-buff joint, cruciform-joint, notched and spot-welded in a range of thickness from 1.5 mm to 5 mm. The test programme concentrated on corrosion tests to reproduce severe conditions like mud and saline fog, and fatigue and fatigue corrosion tests to reproduce the heavy repeated loads which are submitted to transport media (e.g. train carriages, trucks etc) during their service life. The experimental activity was complemented by chemical analysis, metallographic investigation, hardness measurements and fracture surface examination.

The results obtained confirm that by using austenitic stainless steels, advantages can be expected in terms of higher safety and in terms of reduction of maintenance operations and therefore of the relative costs.
