Final report on Contract No. 7210-TS/203, 940, 405, from 1 July 1996 to 30 June 2000.

This project aimed at developing galvannealing for high-strength steels in a wide range of steel grades in order to meet the demand of the automotive industry for materials allowing weight reduction of the car body, having good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and low production costs.

Two types of applications were involved: deep drawing grades with yield strength in the 200-300Mpa range obtained from rephosphorised interstitial-free and bake hardened steels, and strips with yield strength from 300 to 500Mpa for reinforcing parts made from micro-alloyed steels. Two galvannealing cycles were investigated: the normal cycle corresponding to gas and medium frequency, and the square cycle with large heating and cooling rates.

The following steps were planned in the research programme: optimising the chemical composition of the steels in order to balance the mechanical properties of the strip and the quality of the coating, defining the optimal processing conditions in the annealing, hot-dip galvanising and galvannealing sections and assessing the properties of the coating. The main part of the work was conducted in the laboratory by making use of hot-dip and galvannealing simulators. Trials were also made in pilot line as well as commercial line.

Such a development offers the steel industry an opportunity to counter the competitive threat of alternative materials. This project is of great significance in the context of the development of lightweight vehicles, one of the major priorities for European research.
