This pilot project consists of the engineering, construction and installation of a Dynamic Shaperoll ((DSR) in the finishing section of a conventional hot strip mill for steel. The Dynamic Shaperoll is developed by Clecim and Davy International as an actuator for shape gauge and profile control in rolling mills. So far it has been successfully applied in aluminium rolling mills. The DSR replaces a conventional back-up roll; it is a back-up roll with a variable roll profile, due to hydraulic pads inside a flexible sleeve. The pads are mounted on a fixed beam, with a rotating sleeve, with an oil film bearing between pads and sleeve.

The main objective of the pilot and demonstration programme was to test the capability, the feasibility and the reliability of the DSR in a steel hot strip mill. The DSR failed to meet the requirements, mainly owing to the collapse of the oil film bearing, due to mechanical and thermal distortion. The operating conditions in a steel hot strip mill with regard to load and speed are well outside the boundaries achieved so far with a DSR in other applications. Newly gained insights with improved model calculations have shown that the minimum control targets defined beforehand will almost certainly not be met. Therefore the outcome of the pilot project is that the application of DSR technology in a steel hot strip mill is not successful.
