Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The specific programme "Nuclear Fission Safety 1994-1998", under the Euratom 4th Framework Programme, consisted of five research areas, each of them divided into a number of sub-areas. This EUR report contains the final summary reports of the 10 multi-partner research projects carried out in the sub-area B.4 "Containment integrity", which were grouped under a common "cluster" known as "CONT". It also contains an overview paper prepared by the EC Scientific Officer in charge of the cluster, with emphasis on the objectives, results and relevant achievements of the projects as well as on the main beneficiaries of the results, i.e. regulatory bodies and/or industry sector. Similar EUR reports have been produced for the 6 other clusters of projects of area B ("Reactor Safety"), namely "INV", "EXV", "ST", "AMM" "INNO" and "AGE".

In the CONT cluster, the research was focused on the area of containment integrity, with emphasis on the loading term and the response of the containment building, with the aim of reducing any (severe) accident risk in current and future generations of reactors, from the point of view both of prevention and of mitigation. The CONT cluster has examined, in particular, hydrogen explosions generated by critical concentrations of hydrogen resulting from steam oxidation processes of hot metallic materials during core melting. Other areas significant to containment integrity and investigated in this cluster are pressurization scenarios and containment by-pass.
