The Joint Research Centre (JRC), one of the Directorates General of the European Commission, carries out research and provides technical know-how in support of European Union (EU) policies. The JRC implements its mission through specific research programmes decided by the Council and funded mainly by the Budget of the European Union. The work of the JRC includes customer-driven scientific and technical services for specific Community policies, such as those on the environment, agriculture or nuclear safety.

This year's report follows a totally new approach which aims to provide a simpler, shorter and more accessible presentation of the JRC�s work. This reflects the considerable changes that took place in 2001. The JRC replaced the Institute for Advanced Materials with the Institute for Energy, and fused activities of the Space Applications Institute into the Institute for Environment and Sustainability and the Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen.
