In recent years, the quantity of municipal solid waste that is refuse from domestic households and small businesses has increased significantly in the EU, raising the question of its sustainable disposal management. Incineration with energy recovery is a viable method to cope with huge quantities of waste that cannot economically be recycled. At present the use of incineration lags behind the more popular waste management option, landfill. The energy potential of waste incineration is not fully exploited. This report provides a brief introduction to the incineration of MSW, concentrating on two main issues, furnace corrosion and emissions reduction. Secondly, an overview on potential approaches to improve energy efficiency in MSW incineration is presented and discussed.
