Abstract

The mission of the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) is to provide scientific support to the development and implementation of EU policies related to health and consumer protection. The IHCP carries out research to improve the understanding of the hazards and health risks posed by food contaminants, chemicals, biocides and biochemical systems.The present report presents highlights of the year 2001, as well as describing the work of the IHCP's various units and on-going activities. During 2001, the IHCP consolidated its position as a scientific and reference validation centre for food safety, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and chemical substances, and also contributed to the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA).
