NOx emissions from the electricity generation sector and from aircraft propulsion systems
This report presents information concerning anthropogenic NOx emissions from two main sources, i.e. electricity generation and air transport. It briefly reviews the chemistry of formation of NOx compounds and the effects on health and on the environment. Emission sources of anthropogenic NOx are identified and the emission levels for the two sectors are compared with total current emission levels. Various electricity generation technologies are ranked in terms of emission levels, and future emission trends in power generation and in air transport are presented. Emission abatement and control technologies are presented and compared in terms of the respective reduction potential and in terms of capital cost and cost per ton of NOx removed, in particular for the electricity generation sector. The report concludes with an overview of EU legislation and directives with respect to emissions from power plants and from air transport.
