Round robin testing was carried out in 2000 by 12 laboratories using four different pyrolysis liquids (pine, spruce, hardwood mix, bark) produced by different pyrolysis processes (transported bed, bubbling fluidised bed, rotating cone, and vacuum). Both physical (water, pH, viscosity, stability index, CHN, solids) and chemical (pyrolytic lignin, chemical composition) characterisation were performed. In general, the accuracies of all the physical analyses, except stability index, were good. Good laboratory practice, including proper calibration of equipment, adherence to instructions, proper homogenisation, homogeneity verification, and proper sampling of the liquid, prevents systematic errors.
