From the commercial and industrial point of view the driving force of all activity is the existence of marketable products. The first challenge is therefore to define a target product. What are the possible products from cellulose pyrolysis? Five principal modes or pathways of decomposition can be identified, each characterised by one of the following specific products:
- Cellobiosan and other anhydro-oligosaccharides
- Levoglucosan
- Hydroxyacetaldehyde
- Levoglucosenone
- Synthesis gas

What are the required process conditions for their optimisation? Thermogravimetric data suggest that differently prepared celluloses show different pyrolysis characteristics. Therefore in discussions of cellulose pyrolysis kinetics it should be stated which of the possible decomposition modes is being referred to, i.e. which is dominant under given conditions.
