Abstract

This report focuses on the study of catalytic pyrolysis and gasification of biomass. This research work has been carried out at bench scale and using an installation based on the Waterloo Fast Pyrolysis Process (WFPP). The experimental work considered the influence of the following operating variables on the performance of pyrolysis:
- Catalyst process preparation: Calcination and reduction conditions, hydrogen flow rate, time reduction.
- Catalyst weight/biomass flow rate (W/mb) ratio.
- Reaction time.

The main problem of this process is the loss of catalyst activity, which is mainly caused by carbon deposits. The deactivation of the catalyst can be lower using different reaction atmospheres. This has been observed in steam gasification of biomass, where the influence of Steam/Biomass ratio has been studied. Another possibility to diminish catalyst deactivation is introducing some promoters in the catalyst formulation.
