Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Environment, health, and safety concerns were identified during the stages of production, storage, handling, and transport, and utilization (combustion) of bio-oil. The group interest focused mostly on the hazards resulting from toxic properties of bio-oils. IEA Bioenergy Pyrolysis Activity, NREL, and Natural Resources Canada sponsored an in-depth review on the health and safety aspects of pyrolysis liquids that has been conducted by J. Diebold. We also reviewed existing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for bio-oil related products and, considering the above mentioned study, proposed an updated version of MSDS for bio-oils. Another area of interest is biodegradability of the oils. We present preliminary results of the ongoing study.
