The specific programme "Nuclear Fission Safety 1994-1998", under the Euratom 4th Framework Programme, consisted of five research areas, each of them divided into a number of sub-areas. This EUR report contains the final summary reports of the 11 multi-partner research projects carried out in the sub-area B.6 "Structural materials ageing", which were grouped under a common "cluster" known as "AGE". It also contains an overview paper prepared by the EC Scientific Officers in charge of the cluster, with emphasis on the objectives, results and relevant achievements of the projects. Similar EUR reports have been produced for the other 6 clusters of projects of area B ("Reactor Safety"), namely "INV", "EXV", "CONT", "ST", "AMM" and "INNO".

In the AGE cluster, the research was focused on ageing of the reactor pressure level, ageing of the primary piping and reviews on non-destructive testing techniques and risk-informed inspection. Special efforts were devoted to irradiation embrittlement, corrosion effects and residual stresses, as well as to dosimetry and reconstitution techniques of Charpy-size specimens. The principal objectives were reduction of uncertainties on ageing materials behaviour, validation of assessment tools for ageing components and implementation of the research results into 'common European approaches' and 'best practices' for life assessment strategies. The EU contribution to those 11 projects amounted to EUR 2.1 million and their total value was EUR 3.5 million.
