Abstract

Increasing congestion on European roads, and the severe environmental impact from road traffic necessitates solutions involving the use of alternative transport modes such as railways, inland waterways and short sea shipping. Therefore efforts are being made to promote intermodal transport.

One important element in intermodal transport is the standardised container unit, which can be easily transferred between transport systems. The growing importance of just-in-time transport leads to smaller load sizes, which do not use the full space of existing standardised containers and swap bodies. For transport of small load sizes, a small container with a load capacity of three to nine Europallets could be a better solution.

COST Action 339 has generated proposals on small containers and recommends standardisation based on the results of the action.
