Abstract

Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/080, 1 July 1998 to 30 June 2001.

Lime-saturated top slags, intensive ladle stirring and low oxygen potentials are prerequisites for the desulphurisation of liquid steel to low residual levels. It was the objective of this project to investigate the influencing parameters of the desulphurisation reaction in detail, to quantify the reaction kinetics and to develop new methods of desulphurisation treatment. The investigation comprised plant trials, laboratory experiments and modelling of the desulphurisation process.

The results obtained from the trials show that the following measures are favourable for the removal of sulphur:
- Adjustment of ladle slag amount and composition;
- Use of lime-saturated ladle slags for desulphurisation;
- Intensive bath stirring;
- Control of the slag amount and the aluminium content of liquid steel during ladle treatment.

The results of the model calculations are in good agreement with the courses of components measured during the desulphurisation process.
