Abstract

Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/024, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2001.

The aim of this project was to develop an automatic system for recognition and quantification of flatness defects at heavy plates after a water cooling treatment for online optimisation of the cooling process of TMPC (thermo-mechanical control process) plates.

Based on a laser distance measurement system, the flatness of the plates is automatically detected and qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated including flatness defect type recognition for plate head, fillet and tail area. Flatness defects are evaluated by a new classification system derived from a 3D reference catalogue especially generated for ACC (accelerated cooling) cooled heavy plates by full-scale tests in the rolling mill. A heuristical online model was developed by the correlation of cooling parameters and the evaluated flatness defects.

With this heuristical model, a closed process online loop for the cooling line to improve plate flatness step by step was designed and successfully tested for one plate geometry and one flatness defect type. Parallel to the heuristical model, a physically based model - including thermometallurgical and mechanical components - was developed, which is able to perform a numerical analysis of the residual stresses and of the deformation process. With respect to the closed loop application, a corrective strategy module was created to support the step-by-step flatness improvement.
