Final report on Contract No 18674-2001-11 F1E1 ISP FI.

This work has been undertaken within the framework of the EURO-Landscape project of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. The main objective of the EURO-Landscape project is to develop Geographic Information for assessing and monitoring the European landscape with special emphasis on the development of criteria and indicators for sustainable development, environmental conditions and biodiversity.

The work presented here contributes to the development of the project's research on biodiversity indicators. The interest in forest biodiversity has increased in the European Union in recent years. Since no small-scale, large area biodiversity monitoring system exists, this study contributes to the assessment of the suitability of the so-called ICP Level-1 network for providing a monitoring tool for European forest biodiversity. The present study is meant as a contribution to the discussion on the future extension of the Level-1 network, both in terms of number of plots and in terms of purpose.
