Abstract

The aim of this study was to carry out a realistic reconstruction of the inundation of the Ziltendorfer Niederung during the 1997 floods with sufficient accuracy. A further aim was to evaluate four alternative scenarios to assess the effects of possible mitigation measures to minimize the effects of future flood events. The inundation was reconstructed using the Delft-FLS model, and the validation data compared to the simulated results, leading to a discussion of the significant causes of error. The simulations showed that the timing of the dyke opening and the dynamics of the size of the opening are important for the water level in the Oder, but the number and the timing of dyke breaches hardly affects the maximum water-level in the Ziltendorfer Niederung.
