COST Action 715 on 'Meteorology applied to urban air pollution problems' was set up to evaluate meteorological variables that are needed in air quality assessments in urban areas. Some of these variables are not routinely measured, and in normal circumstances the number of meteorological stations in urban areas is limited to a few sites. The action was organised in four working groups, dealing with (1) urban wind fields, (2) surface energy budget and mixing height, (3) air pollution episodes in cities, and (4) meteorological input data for urban site studies.

The project held a workshop in Toulouse, France, on 3 and 4 October 2001, comprising expert presentations on mixing heights and temperature inversions in urban areas. The workshop was jointly organised by working groups 2 and 3. Nine presentations were made, five on mixing heights and four on inversions. This volume contains the extended abstracts, conclusions and recommendations of the workshop.
