In 2000, the JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements, in the framework of the EU enlargement, set up a project to improve the scientific basis for metrology in chemistry in EU Candidate Countries. Chemical measurements are essential in different fields (biology, environment, geology, medicine etc). Important decisions are often based on these in support of legislation, production processes and societal problems. Several activities were initiated, one of which was to assist each country to write a Status Report on Metrology in Chemistry.

In this report, main aspects of the present state of Metrology in Chemistry (MiC) in the Czech Republic are presented. The information given in the report was collected by personal communications and discussions with Czech experts from various fields and by the knowledge and the experience of the author of the report. A table shows all organisations and their responsibilities in MiC in Czech Republic. Details are given in the subsequent text.
