Abstract

The importance of anaerobic biodegradation of organic matter is increasing worldwide, in line with the current demand for sustainable development and pollution prevention and control. Despite discoveries in the field of anaerobic conversion of organic compounds, rigorous investigations into the basics of anaerobic digestion are still scarce. The need for harmonisation of analytical methods and practices was addressed in this workshop, which assembled about 30 experts working in the field of anaerobic processes. The workshop comprised a number of keynote presentations, followed by parallel sessions of two Working Groups, on "Biodegradability" and "Activity, Toxicity and Inhibition". The workshop resulted in the establishment of an International Water Association task group on Harmonization of Anaerobic Biodegradation, Activity and Inhibition Assays (TG-ABAI), with a website at: http://www.ftns.wau.nl/mt/abai/abai.htm
