Abstract

The work performed in this project will provide necessary and complementary information for the design and operation of a DSC demonstration caster in a steel plant. The work was carried out in close cooperation between MEFOS, the Technical University of Clausthal (TU Clausthal), Salzgitter AG (SZAG) and the other industrial partners.

The project part performed at MEFOS was devoted to the improvement of caster performance regarding thickness tolerances, edge uniformity and strip surfaces. The strip width is 870 mm and the thickness around 10 mm. The aim of the Clausthal project part, performed in close cooperation between Salzgitter AG and TU Clausthal, was to reach high process stability, yielding reliably good product properties. To reach this aim, different kinds of optimisation of hardware and casting practice were performed. The aim of the simulator tests at Salzgitter AG was to show that for selected typical steel grades mechanical/technological properties comparable to those of conventionally produced material can be achieved.

Summing up, the technology has been brought to a stage where sufficient information is available to design and construct a demonstration plant. This should be the next step for establishing the DSC process which will offer far-reaching benefits with regard to the production of new steel grades with improved properties.
