The proportion of GDP allocated to R&D expenditure varies widely across the European regions. Five of the top ten regions are in Germany, while the region with the highest absolute R&D expenditure is the Île de France. In terms of the proportion of R&D personnel in the labour force, five of the ten leading regions are from the Nordic countries.

The Statistics in Focus series is published regularly by Eurostat and provides up-to-date summaries of the main results of statistical surveys, studies and analyses. It consists of about four to eight pages per issue.
