Building confidence in deep disposal: the borehole injection sites at Krasnoyarsk-26 and Tomsk-7 (BORIS)

Abstract

The overall goal of the BORIS project was to use data and samples from the Russian borehole injection sites for liquid radioactive waste at Krasnoyarsk-26 and Tomsk-7 to further understand the chemical behaviour and migration of radionuclides in the geological environment.

Databases describing the geology, hydrogeology and operation of the Krasnoyarsk-26 and Tomsk-7 sites have been compiled including waste compositions, injection history, piezometric, hydrochemical, geological and geophysical measurements. Time-lapse gamma and hydrochemical data provide a graphic demonstration that clay layers within and adjacent to the disposal horizons are effective barriers to vertical radionuclide migration. Groundwater chemistry and gamma logs may be combined to estimate effective retardation of radionuclides.

Contaminated and uncontaminated groundwaters from the HLW/ILW and LLW disposal horizons were collected from Tomsk-7 and subsequently subjected to detailed radiochemical analysis and ultra-filtration in Russian laboratories. Groundwater filtrates were transported to Germany for microbiological analysis. An intercomparison of experimental sorption techniques was made, using contrasting experimental approaches. Sorption is influenced by mineral transformations, including secondary phase formation, and the elemental phase (speciation) in solution. Experiments carried out at disposal horizon conditions show that mineral transformations may have a profound, though localised, effect on permeability.
