Water for life: EU water initiative. International cooperation - from knowledge to action

Funded under: FP5-INCO 2

Leaders at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, in Johannesburg in September 2002, called for halving the numbers of people without access to basic sanitation or safe drinking water by 2015. To support these goals, the EU Water Initiative was launched with the aim of mobilizing partners, from governments to private enterprises, and of adopting river basin-scale policy, planning and management. This brochure shows the European Commission's work on issues addressed by the Water Initiative, and its commitment to pursue its goals by partnering with others. It was produced through a collaboration of Directorates-General Research, Development, External Relations, Environment, Fisheries and Information Society as well as the EuropeAid Office and the European Investment Bank. An annex provides project summary information from a selection of past, on-going and planned projects.
