Abstract

The project, which was executed during the period July 1997 to June 2001, was aimed at developing radiotracer-based methods for monitoring corrosion in industrial plants. The objectives were:
- To develop the TLA technique for use in industrial applications with particularly corrosive environments or complicated geometries in which the use of conventional methods is not possible;
- To improve the quality of corrosion monitoring as compared to current techniques by providing data concerning specific parts of a structure that will allow for improved corrosion control;
- To improve reliability of steel structures by continuous monitoring, providing short- and long-term data.

The investigated materials were as follows: Zn coated carbon steel, three stainless steels (Sanicro 28, SAF 2507 and AISI 316), carbon steel, titanium and a Ni-Cu alloy (Monel 400).

Additional effort was expended in the area of method development of TLA for the study of weld corrosion. Additionally, activation routes and methods were developed for the small area activation of weld samples to study the localized corrosion in the fused and heat-affected zones of welded steel components. Studies were conducted to determine the effectiveness of small area TLA in an examination of the corrosion of two different welded steels.

The results of the various activities within the project have shown the capabilities of TLA for the corrosion monitoring of a range of important industrial alloys and metals for both research and industrial applications.
