Abstract

This report is the output of an international meeting held at the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability in Ispra, Italy on 29 and 30 October 2001. It provides an in-depth report of the meeting and summarises the results from project work undertaken at different scales, but with the common aim of providing tools and techniques to assess and monitor biodiversity. This report aims to:
- provide an overview of the current approaches for monitoring forest biodiversity;
- provide examples of the most promising methodologies appropriate for Europe;
- describe the main options, their benefits, deficits and development needs in order to establish a European approach to monitor forest biodiversity.
