The long-term objective of the EU Fusion Programme is the harnessing of fusion energy leading to the construction of prototype fusion power plants. The principal focus of the fusion research is on confining and heating plasmas using strong magnetic fields. Many of the leading-edge technologies involved have been pushed to new limits, and innovative solutions to the challenging problems have found applications far beyond the bounds of fusion. The exploitation of spin-offs from the technologies developed within the fusion programme is of significant benefit to European society. Examples of spin-off successes resulting from development work in the fusion programme, past and present, are highlighted in this brochure.
