Abstract

In the Fifth Framework Programme the activities carried out in the Institute for Environment and Sustainability on the subject related to sustainable urban and regional development have been referred to as the 'MOLAND project'. The aim of MOLAND is to assess, monitor and model past, present and future urban and regional development from the point of view of sustainable development, by setting up land use and transport network databases for various cities and regions in Europe. To date, the MOLAND database has covered the following geographical situations: around 40 urban areas (in EU countries, the accession countries, and Turkey and ex-Yugoslavia); three transport corridors; two extended regions in Europe; seven urban areas outside Europe. This technical note describes the preparation of the territorial and environmental database for the region of Harjumaa and the corridor Tallinn-Pärnu, a component of the Via Baltica.
