  • Development of a protocol for the analysis of toxic PAH, azaarenes and their nitro-, hydroxy-, and oxo-derivatives in emission exhaust and ambient PM

Abstract

In preparation for FP6, the Laboratory for Advanced Chemical Analysis of emission exhaust and airborne particulate matter in ERLAP has conducted research on the development of procedures for mass spectrometric analysis of potential cancer promoting compounds and other particle associated air toxics such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons and their nitro-, hydroxy-, and oxo-derivatives, azaarenes and their nitro-derivatives, carbonyls and long-chain carboxylic acids.

The present report presents the developed protocol for the chemical analysis of the above mentioned particle associated air toxics. It is divided into three parts. The first part describes the development of analytical procedures for polyaromatic compounds (PAC), in particular azaarenes. The second part describes the synthesis of nitrated aromatic compounds as calibration standards. The third part describes the fine tuning of the analytical protocol and the testing of it on emissions from motorcycles.
