A discrete stage-based model coupled with a continuous biogeochemical model: Management of clams (Tapes philippinarum) in Sacca di Goro

A discrete stage-based model for the growth of Tapes philippinarum has been coupled with a continuous biogeochemical model of the Sacca di Goro ecosystem. For the growth of Tapes philippinarum the model considers the temperature and nutrient content of the water column. Furthermore, the effects of harvesting as well as the mortality due to anoxic crisis are taken into account. The model results have been compared with data on clam productivity in the lagoon. The results show that the model is in general agreement with estimated data and, hence, may be used as a management tool for optimizing rearing of clams as well as for improving the lagoon ecosystem.
