In 2001, the European Patent Office (EPO) filed over 60,000 patent applications from EU countries, as well as 47,000 from the USA and 22,000 from Japan. These numbers are around 70-90% more than in 1996. Within the EU, Germany accounts for the largest proportion (41%) of total EU patent applications. Applications to the EPO from candidate countries are below the EU average, though some show application rates above those of some Member States.

The Statistics in Focus series is published regularly by Eurostat and provides up-to-date summaries of the main results of statistical surveys, studies and analyses. It consists of about four to eight pages per issue.
