There is a growing need to closely monitor agro-environmental measures by establishing indicators that can assess the impact of agriculture on the environment and the rural landscape. An informal group of staff from several Commission services and the European Environment Agency are exploring the tools available to monitor agricultural and rural landscapes and their development over time. In this third common publication, the teams focus on the use of the Land Cover and Use Areal Survey (LUCAS) for building landscape agri-environment indicators. The publication comprises ten individual papers addressing different aspects of this topic.

This publication extends the analysis of independent as well as joint use of land cover information (CORINNE land cover database), administrative data (IACS-GIS area aids declarations)and geo-referenced statistical surveys (LUCAS-type point sampling surveys). Working separately, the datasets show they can provide fluxes, stocks and pressure indicators. The information available in the LUCAS datasets is far from being fully exploited. Wider scientific access to the data would permit an extended analysis of the environmental, structural and land use data. A repetition of the survey planned for 2003 will provide grounds for temporal evolution analysis.
