Abstract

For a good environmental protection, the start up of industrial plants, power plants and incinerators should be preceded by an evaluation of the environmental situation before the plant operations commence. The investigation should take into account all four environmental factors (water, soil, air and biota). This study is a good example of an investigation of an area where a refuse incinerator unit is to be constructed. The study shows how analysis of soils, bioindicators (mosses), air and water could provide information seepage and contamination by heavy metals, organic substances and polluted gas emissions. The elements and parameters analysed were:
- Soils (Si, Al, Ca, K, Fe, P, Ti, Mg, S, As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, 137Cs, 40K, dioxins, microbial biomass and pH);
- Mosses (As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn);
- Air (SO2 and NO2);
- Water (Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, Tl, Pb, pH, conductivity, hardness, NH4+, HCO3-, Cl-, NO2-, NO3-, PO4-, SO4-, Na+, K+, Mg++ and Ca++).

The objective is an evaluation of the initial threshold level. Other sets of data must be collected after a period of normal plant operation. All the information will be compared in order to obtain a general overview of the environmental impact.
