Fusion energy research: the central role of the European Union
The growth in worldwide energy demand, and the unsustainable character of the present major energy sources, requires the development of abundant, clean and sustainable energy sources. The European Union is moving towards the construction of an experimental reactor, ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), which should lead to the commercial use of fusion power by the middle of the century.
