Sources for ambient particulate matter. I. Gas-to-particle conversion of biogenic compounds

Abstract

This report is a contribution to the integrated scientific area "Emissions, Air Quality and Health" and to the BOND project running under the 5th Research Framework Programme. The BOND project aims to understand and quantify the relative contribution of biogenic components to the observed particulate matter (PM) concentration levels in the Mediterranean environment. The project focuses on two representative Mediterranean regions, Marseilles and Athens, with important biogenic emissions and sufficient degree of diversity. The JRC is making a twofold contribution to the project:
- laboratory investigations on the influence of temperature on particle formation processes of selected biogenics;
- carbon-14 determination of airborne carbonyls in order to apportion their source (biogenic versus petrochemic).
This report documents the fulfilment of the first task. The methodology and results obtained are discussed in detail, preceded by a general introduction to terpenes, aerosols and climate change.
