The High Flux Reactor (HFR) Petten, managed by the Institute for Energy of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, is one of the most powerful multi-purpose materials testing reactors in the world. The HFR is a centre of excellence for nuclear applications for medicine in Europe, and is also involved in research and testing of new industrial materials and new fuels. Publication of the 2001 annual report marks the 40th anniversary of the first criticality of the HFR in 1961.
