Abstract

In 2002 (Eurostat estimate based on provisional data), the governments of the European Union allocated more than EUR 69 billion in budget appropriations or outlays on R&D. This sum represented 0.75% of GDP in the European Union, slightly less than in 2001. As well as analysing government outlays on R&D over the last decade, the report provides a breakdown of the figures by socio-economic objective, and includes an international perspective.

The Statistics in Focus series is published regularly by Eurostat and provides up-to-date summaries of the main results of statistical surveys, studies and analyses. It consists of about four to eight pages per issue.
