Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The 5th European Conference on Research for Protection, Conservation and Enhancement of Cultural Heritage was held in Krakow, Poland, from 16 to 18 May 2002.The conference was held within the Key Action 'The City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage', part of the programme 'Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development' of the 5th Framework Programme (1998-2002). The event was organised, in liaison with the European Commission, by Polish research organisations and the City of Krakow. It was the first time that this conference took place in a candidate country.

A significant degree of understanding of causes, mechanisms, and consequences of damage to European Cultural Heritage has developed over 15 years of European Commission research in the field. This was the time to survey the state of collaborative European research in the field, to review the technologies and methods that had been proposed and tested, and to consider what still needed to be done and explored.
