The EU-15 increased its R&D intensity to 1.99 % in 2002, from 1.94% in 2001, but without reducing the gap with Japan (2.98 %) and the United States (2.80 %). The number of EU-15 R&D personnel continued to increase, rising from 1.76 million in full-time equivalent (FTE) in 2001 to 1.83 million in 2002.

The Statistics in Focus series is published regularly by Eurostat and provides up-to-date summaries of the main results of statistical surveys, studies and analyses. It consists of about four to eight pages per issue.
